"Reality lives with us. We are the result and called to the vision of community open to diverse paths. A community that is designed to be self governing, provide neighborly support, affordable housing and a physical place appropriate for elders."
ElderSpirit Community at Trailview Residents Association. Stakeholders Workshop 2005.
The ElderSpirit Community at Trailview in Abingdon Virginia is the living example of a community of mutual support and late life spirituality. It is the first mixed-income, mixed ownership Elder Co-Housing Community in the United States and in this capacity it is making its way as it "walks the talk."

At June 2008, the ElderSpirit Community at Trailview has 40 members living in 13 ownership homes, 16 rented homes in the co-housing building complex and in three homes in the neighborhood. The community is designed for senior independent living and is not assisted living, congregate living or a skilled nursing facility.

On the Way to Supper at the Common House

Elderspirit Community at Trailview is self-organized and managed. The Residents' Association comprises all the residents and meets on the second Saturday of each month. Every resident pledges to serve on at least one committee, and the chairs of the committees meet every month as the Council of Chairs. All the committees give reports at the regular monthly meetings. We keep a running list of ad hoc committees as well as the ones that are standing.

Groups have formed to facilitate community living. In addition to committees, we also have the opportunity to meet in small groups we call “pods.” Totally voluntary, pods meet regularly for an hour and a half, are limited to 7 people, and are a way to get to know each other on a deeper level. We describe pod life as "a learning, trusting process for personal and community growth.”

Special interest groups have formed spontaneously. At present, people enjoy exercising together. Another group took turns cooking evening meals for each other using a healthy heart diet. Groups range from one on prayer and another on meditation, to Bridge, singing, book study and social justice concerns. We’ve had training sessions on consensus decision-making and conflict management. A Clearing House committee meets when concerns arise about the physical campus of the community in order to make recommendations for solutions to the appropriate boards or committees.

Information about ElderSpirit Community at Trailview is available. A visit and tour can be arranged at $10 per person.
